Nick Lutsko – Last Man Standing Lyrics

Artist: Nick Lutsko
Song: Last Man Standing

Well, i set up camp in a sacred land
I counted the days that i’ve lived on my hands
And i buried the memory of a cold and broken world
Well, i’ve been alone since i was a child

My mother and father were there for a while
And they tried to protect me with a bullet straight into my skull
But i was a fighter, i wouldn’t allow it
Some say i was lucky, some say they were cowards

But they left me one lesson
If you’re gonna do something
You damn well do it right
So i grew up with the fight

And the words that i heard on that night
„dear jesus, deliver our son from these sinners“
Well, i spent my life travelling what’s left of the land
Mostly starving and covered in scars by the hands

Of much hungrier men, fighting for their place to eat
Well, i found me a girl, heading south in the spring
She was lost and alone and much younger than me
But i knew that i loved her the moment that i heard her speak

And it wasn’t so long before we were with child
It broke her heart open and stole her sweet smile
She said, „i’m drowning in shame. i don’t want you to hate me
„the last thing this dying world needs is a baby“

I told her we should trust
That this dealing was bigger than either of us
Dear jesus, forgive her, for you are our bidder
Our baby was born on the 4th of july

There were no celebrations or lights in the sky
Just ash on the ground and one more mouth to feed
My lady was weak and our throats had run dry
It’d been years since the last of the crops had all died

And each passing day it became harder to find something to eat
But i was a fighter, i made it my mission
To fend for my family under every condition
But even the garden of eden was smitten

By the devil and his lies
So i straightened out my spine
And went looking for something to find
Dear jesus, deliver my family some dinner

I noticed a man lying dead by the street
I got closer and saw he was only asleep
So i pulled out my knife to insure that he wouldn’t wake up
It took over an hour to get the job done

I was sobbing and thinking of what i’d become
But in a world all wrong the hungriest dog is king
I returned to my family to tend to their needs
But my wife wouldn’t see me, she couldn’t believe

I committed such a crime, she started to cry
„you’ve become everything that we’ve ever despised
„and i would rather die
„than continue to live by your side

„dear jesus, remember my husband’s great sin
„oh, sweet jesus, deliver myself from this sinner
„i give you my daughter, and i’m coming with her
„and maybe my husband can have us for dinner

„dear jesus, remember my husband’s great sin
„oh, sweet jesus, deliver myself from this sinner
„i give you my daughter, and i’m coming with her
„and maybe my husband can have us for dinner“

So i set up camp in a sacred land
I grabbed back the knife from my wife’s bloody hands
And i buried the memory
Of a cold and broken world
