Здесь, ещё задолго до того как над всей землёй взорвалось небо
Здесь, где сейчас нет ничего кроме камней и метала
Здесь, сотни лет назад расстилались бескрайние зелёные пастбища
Табуны диких лошадей и вереницы верблюдов шли сюда чтобы испить воды и наесться до сыта
Жили здесь и люди
Небольшие племена, ведущие тихую мирную жизнь скотоводов и ремесленников
В одном и таких племён жила вдова по имени Найман-ана и сын её Жоламан
Он был проворен и крепок духом
Так и шла бы тихая жизнь по кругу, в этих местах
Но задул беспокойный ветер
Могущественный и злой народ вторгся на эти беспечные земли
Они принесли огонь и смерть
Жоламан сильный и смелый воин выступил со своими братьями против орды
И Жоламан проиграл этот бой
Раненный он лежал на траве истекая кровью, когда его нашли охотники за невольниками
И лучше бы он погиб в этот день
Жоламана схватили и подвергли чудовищной пытке
Голову его начисто обрили, надели на неё шапку шири из сырой верблюжей кожи и приковали к земле под палящим солнцем
Кожа неумолимо стискивала череп, а волосы вростали обратно в голову
И мало кто мог вынести эти страшные муки, и совершенно никто не мог сохранить рассудок
Тот кто выживал становился Манкуртом – человеком без памяти и прошлого, безсловестным рабом своего хозяина
И лучше бы он погиб в тот день
Найман-ана узнала о своём сыне и отыскала его в степи
Но сколько бы она ни умоляла сына вспомнить своё имя, всё было напрасно
То был не Жоламан, а Манкурт, готовый на всё ради своего хозяина
Хозяин увидел мать Манкурта и велел убить её
И тогда Жоламан, без сомнений выстрелил матери в сердце из лука
И она упала на землю
“Вспомни чей ты, вспомни чей ты. Твой отец Доненбай…”
Место её погребения люди назвали “Материнским упокоем”

Listen to me, do you know what kind of place this is?
Here, long before the sky exploded over the whole earth
Here, where now there is nothing but stones and metal
Here, hundreds of years ago, endless green pastures spread
The herds of wild horses and a string of camels walked here to drink water and eat to fed up
People lived here and people
Small tribes leading the quiet peaceful life of cattle breeders and artisans
In one and such tribes there was a widow named Nyman-Ana and her son Zholaman
He was vague and strong in spirit
So there would be a quiet life in a circle, in these places
But the restless wind blew
The powerful and evil people invaded these careless lands
They brought fire and death
Zholaman strong and brave warrior came to his brothers against the Horde
And Zholaman lost this battle
Wounded he lay on the grass bleeding when he was found by hunters for slaves
And it would be better if he died that day
Zholaman was seized and subjected to monstrous torture
His head was completely laid, put on it a hat of the width of raw camel of the skin and chained to the ground under the scorching sun
The skin inexorably squeezed the skull, and the hair stomped back into the head
And few could bear these terrible torment, and absolutely no one could keep his mind
The one who survived became a mancurt – a man without memory and the past, the unwound slave of his master
And it would be better if he died that day
Naiman-Ana found out about her son and found him in the steppe
But no matter how much she beg her son to remember her name, everything was in vain
It was not Zholaman, but Mankurt, ready for anything for his master
The owner saw the mother of Mancurt and ordered her to kill her
And then Zholaman, without a doubt, shot his mother in her heart from a bow
And she fell to the ground
“Remember whose you are, remember whose you are. Your father is Donenbay …”
People called the place of her burial “maternal rest”
